Summer Update

Updated: Sep 24

Hello,

Hope everyone is having a great summer! As we approach late summer, exciting things are happening in the vineyard. The red varieties are changing color!

The Color Change and Its Significance

This color change means the grapes are starting to accumulate sugar. As the acid levels decrease, sugar levels increase. This sugar serves as fuel for the yeast. The yeast uses this sugar to convert it into alcohol and carbon dioxide. However, this color change also brings an unwanted guest into the vineyard: birds!

Once the birds see the color change, they know it’s time to feast. They can efficiently eat the grapes, leaving nothing behind in just a matter of days. The best defense against these feathered foes is nets.

Protecting Our Grapes

We primarily use the nets to discourage birds, but they also help keep deer from munching on the leaves. Protecting our grapes is crucial for a successful harvest.

A Promising Growing Year

So far, this year has been an excellent growing year. The cool and wet spring allowed the vines to wake up from winter, producing a great canopy of leaves and a decent fruit set. Now, this hot and dry August will hopefully provide optimal ripening conditions. We are looking forward to a great harvest this year.

Volunteer Opportunities for Harvesting

Speaking of harvest, we have received a lot of interest in volunteering to help pick grapes. There will be a SignUpGenius sent out in a few weeks. The dates for harvest are still uncertain, as they depend on when the grapes tell me they are ready. I will do my best to give as much notice as possible.

Important Dates to Remember

Just a heads up, we will be closed this weekend, August 8th, 9th, and 10th, and will reopen normally the following weekend.

Additionally, inventory from our 2024 vintage is getting very low. We recommend stopping by and stocking up before it’s gone.

Conclusion

As summer winds down, we hope you enjoy the remaining days of the season. Stay tuned for a harvest update in a few weeks.

Have a great end of summer!

Matthew
