Getting close to harvest!

Wow, the grapes have started to turn a different color. This change means the grapes are ripening and starting to increase their sugar content.

These are Foch grapes. They are always the first to ripen. They are however about 3 weeks early this year. I suspect the lack of rain may be a contributing factor.

The good news is the grapes look healthy and on track. Birds think so too. When the grapes change color from green to red, purple, or pink, this tells the birds that the grapes are ready to swoop in and eat. The birds fly away and spread the seeds. This is a natural process. As the grower though, this is no good. The best way to protect the ripening grapes is to use nets. The nets physically keep out birds and deer.

The nets will stay on until harvest and then stored for next year.

This is Noiret and it isn't too far behind the Foch. So exciting!!!

Thanks for reading my post. I hope to have an update with an opening date as soon as I can.
